Product Overview

The Flow Transducer is used in the Engstrom ventilator Breathing Circuit Gas (BCG) module, which is a part of the respiratory care system. A flow sensor is a device used to monitor the air flow rate of a patient and measure the volume of gas dispensed from the O₂ and air channels during inhalation and exhalation. The relative proportion of gas dispensed from each channel is continuously adjusted to accurately control the percentage of O₂ delivered to the patient. The flow sensor is placed in the inlet manifold between the regulator and the flow valve, where the regulator ensures the constant pressure supply to the flow valve. It is a mass flow type sensor, which injects the heat into the flow stream and monitor the temperature rise at the downstream location. The temperature range depends upon the mass flow rate of the flow stream and the specific heat of the gas going through the sensor. There are 3 inspiratory flow sensors used in vent engine. First is the oxygen supply path upstream of the oxygen flow control valves, second is the air supply path upstream of the air flow control valves (both at a nominal 1.72 bar) and third is downstream of both control valves to measure the mixed gas flow rate. The oxygen and air flow sensors will provide a measurement of the mean oxygen concentration delivered and also as calibration for the primary flow control valves. The mixed gas flow sensor will be used to correct the total volume output from both the oxygen and air valves as well as to set the bypass flow rate for the spontaneous patient flow trigger. The same flow sensor is anticipated for use in all three locations. The flow sensor is to be a service module that can be removed and replaced in the ventilator by screws, accessed from one direction only. The sensor is rugged enough so that expected misuse, such as dropping the device will not damage or degrade the performance of the device. Each sensor may be individually calibrated with the data stored on the sensor.
